IFR
Instrument Flight Rules. Air Traffic Control tells you where to go, when and how high. A special rating is needed to file an instrument flight plan.
VFR
Visual Flight Rules. Certain visibility and weather required. Cloud bases must be a certain distance from the ground. As long as the pilot stays a certain distance from clouds (depending on airspace and altitude), he or she can fly at the altitude of choice, below 18,000 ft.
VOR
Very High Frequency Omnidirectional Range. This is a type of navigational aid, or "navaid". Ever wonder why the radio in the car only goes up to 107.9 MHz? Because 108.0 is the beginning of the VOR frequencies. (108.0-117.95 MHz) These work somewhat like a lighthouse, blowing radio waves in every direction. It is much more complicated than this, but again, you probably don't want to know. back to instrument page
